Take the time to acquaint yourself with Salman Khan’s approach to revolutionize education by “flipping the classroom:” giving students online video lectures to watch at home, and then do their “homework” in the classroom with teachers available to help on a one-on-one basis. As Khan himself discovered, using technology this way actually humanizes the educational process rather than reducing it to mindless algorithms. It also gets better results.

We can’t keep investing in outmoded structures and expect to get better results. It’s true in education, and it’s true in health care as well. Ironically, physicians today who are dedicated to doing what’s best for their patients often have to swim upstream against the system rather than confidently rely on it. Imagine if we could “flip the classroom” in health systems where the patient would proactively manage care inside out, in contrast to the current model of the clinician managing care outside in.
