Local Governments Plan to Reduce Homelessness
The Maricopa Association of Governments’ (MAG) member cities and towns have come together to address homelessness. The regional plan “Pathways Home, the Regional Homelessness Action Plan for Local and Tribal Governments,” was approved by the regional council this past December. Arizona has experienced the fastest growth in homelessness in the county. Over the past year, homelessness has increased by 12 percent overall in the MAG region, while the number of those not in shelter has increased by 18 percent. The MAG plan has a target of reducing homelessness by 25 percent by 2027.
The plan has three key action steps: commit to work regionally to reduce homelessness, increase safe housing options, and support diverse partnerships to address homelessness. The report further details how local and tribal governments, nonprofit organizations, philanthropic partners, and business leaders will lead this work to build the infrastructure needed to address needs right now and ensure long-term success.
