Last week, we put a short, unofficial survey out to our Twitter followers and our Facebook friends. We have a group on Facebook called St.Luke’s Health Initiatives, and if you’re there, we would love to have you join us.

The survey asked what was most important to Arizonans about health care reform, and the choices included all the usual points: cost, access, choice. Overwhelmingly, our respondents voted for choice.

To me, this is interesting because many patients don’t know enough to choose providers wisely, and when they move to a new town, they ask the advice of a friend. They also search online for information, and they rely on their primary care physicians for specialist referrals.

Perhaps choice does not mean the same thing to the survey’s respondents as it does to health professionals. And remember, this was a very unscientific survey:-) Another, bigger survey asked Americans if they thought they’d be better off with health care reform, and less than half thought they would be.

Apparently, many people still think the system isn’t broken. My guess is that they’re the healthy ones:-)
